Bird strikes – A significant threat to aviation safety

Bird control solutions

Preventing bird strikes

Bird strikes are a significant threat to aviation safety worldwide. Collisions between aircraft and birds can cause significant damage to aircraft, resulting in costly repairs, flight delays and, in some cases, loss of life.

“The estimated annual cost of bird strikes in the U.S is $205 million dollars, and globally as $1.2 billion dollars.”

Reducing the risk of bird strikes

BirdProTech can help the wildlife hazard management team implement new solutions to reduce the risk of bird strikes.

By developing a dedicated web application that remotely controls acoustic repellers, BirdProTech is creating an all-in-one bird control solution that helps to manage, predict and protect against bird strike problems.

AirTrac®: innovative bird control solution

The AirTrac® system is a bird repeller specifically designed to address bird problems in airport areas. This innovative solution is manufactured in France by BirdProTech’s team of bird control experts.

  • Accoustic emitters are connected to a web application that remotely controls, monitors and records each scaring signal emission.
  • Transmitters use the AviTrac® repellers base, which have proven their reliability and durability, since 2016. With over 10,000 units in operation worldwide, they demonstrate their effectiveness on a global scale.
  • AirTrac® solution is equipped with a remote control and monitoring interface via tablets connected via 4G to the central control server.
  • Each connection is secured by a VPN with encrypted communications to ensure the cyber security and integrity of the system.
  • The system’s design is modular, allowing smooth integration without the need to modify or create a fixed infrastructure.
  • Finally, it has been developed to ensure a high level of responsiveness, with orders allowing the immediate activation of transmitters.

To reduce the attractiveness of airport areas to birds, airports need to adopt a comprehensive approach that combines habitat management and bird deterrents.

Such as the removal of standing water and regular mowing of vegetation, can help reduce the availability of food and shelter for birds.

The use of visual and acoustic deterrents will help to reduce the number of birds in the airport area.

By developing a dedicated web application that remotely controls acoustic repellers, BirdProTech is creating an all-in-one bird control solution that helps to manage, predict and protect against bird strike problems.

Critical phases

Approximately 90% of bird strikes occur within the low altitude range of 0-150 metres, highlighting the critical role that airports play in implementing robust measures to mitigate this risk. This zone of vulnerability underlines the need for proactive strategies to manage bird populations and reduce the chance of such events occurring near runways.

Among the various phases of flight, take-off is particularly critical, accounting for 66% of all bird strikes. During this phase, aircraft operate with high thrust and limited controllability, making them particularly vulnerable to wildlife.

The impact of bird strikes is most pronounced on key components of the aircraft, such as the engines, radome and canopy. These areas are highly vulnerable and suffer damage in almost 70% of reported incidents. (Source : Préventique sécurité – n°110 – Mars / Avril 2010).
